    What is a Life Alarm system?

    A Life Alarm system (also called personal emergency response system / PERS) typically consists of a wearable device (pendant, wristband) and a base or mobile unit connected to 24/7 monitoring. Pressing a help button connects the user to a trained specialist who can dispatch help.

    The user wears a help-button device. In an emergency (fall, medical issue) the user presses the button (or automatic fall detection triggers).The monitoring centre gets alerted and assesses the situation, then calls the appropriate contact or emergency services. Some systems also have mobile/GPS so they work outside the home.

    They’re especially beneficial for:
    Older adults living alone. People at risk of falls, medical episodes, fainting, heart disease. Seniors who go out (so mobile alert with GPS helps).
    Anyone who wants peace of mind for themselves or the family.

    Yes, especially if the senior is at risk of falling and perhaps cannot press a button themselves. Falls are common: for example, 1 in 4 older adults fall each year in the US. But fall detection often adds to cost. So assess risk vs budget.

    It should be easy: pendant must be worn, device should be charged/maintained. If the senior is not comfortable or forgets to wear it, it won’t help. Users with low tech comfort may prefer non‐smartwatch style.
