How a Medical Alert System Works

From the moment you press the button to the second paramedics walk through the door — here's exactly what happens, in plain English.

A medical alert system is a wearable device that connects you to a 24/7 monitoring center at the press of a button — or automatically when a fall is detected. A live US operator answers in about 15 seconds, talks to you through the device's two-way speaker, locates you via GPS, and dispatches 911 or a family contact based on your situation.

  1. Choose your device

Pick the Life Alarm Plus, Life Alarm S, or Life Alarm Watch based on lifestyle, fall risk, and battery preference. Our specialists can help you decide in a 5-minute call.

  2. We ship it free, ready to go

Your medical alert arrives pre-activated and pre-paired to your account. No software, no apps to install, no technician visit required.

  3. It connects to 4G LTE automatically

Each device has a built-in cellular SIM that runs on AT&T, Verizon, and TELUS networks. No Wi-Fi, no landline, no home base station — protection works anywhere with cell coverage.

  4. Wear it all day, every day

Lightweight, waterproof, and comfortable enough to forget you have it on. Wear it in the shower, on a walk, or to the grocery store.

  5. Press the button — or let it press itself

In an emergency, one press connects you to a live US-based operator within 15 seconds. If you fall and can't press it, automatic fall detection does it for you.

  6. We handle the rest

Our operator confirms your situation, dispatches 911 if needed, and stays on the line until help arrives. Your family is contacted automatically.

What happens when you press the button

0 sec — Button pressed (or fall detected)

The device immediately initiates a 4G LTE call to our monitoring center and pings GPS coordinates.

<10 sec — Operator answers

A live US-based, TMA-certified operator answers — never an automated menu. Your name, address, medications, and emergency contacts are already on their screen.

10–30 sec — Two-way voice check

The operator speaks to you through the device's built-in speaker. They calmly assess: are you okay? Did you fall? Do you need 911?

30–60 sec — Help is dispatched

If needed, the operator dispatches 911 with your exact GPS location, while staying on the line. Your family is automatically notified.

Until you're safe — We don't hang up

The operator stays connected with you until paramedics or your loved ones arrive. You are never alone during an emergency.

Common questions about how it works

How does a medical alert system actually call for help?

When you press the help button, the device places a cellular call directly to our 24/7 monitoring center. A trained US-based operator hears your voice through the device's speaker and microphone, identifies you using GPS and your account profile, and dispatches the appropriate response — paramedics, family members, or both. The whole process takes under 30 seconds from button press to response decision.

Do I need Wi-Fi or a landline?

No. Every Life Alarm Direct device is a true mobile PERS (mPERS), with a built-in 4G LTE cellular connection. You don't need internet, a smartphone, or a home phone line. The device works the moment it arrives.

What happens if the device falls into water?

All three of our devices are waterproof and rated for shower and bath use. Showers and bathrooms are statistically the highest-risk fall location for seniors, so we engineered for it. Wear your device in the shower without worry.

How does automatic fall detection work?

An accelerometer and gyroscope inside the device monitor sudden vertical drops combined with impact. When a likely fall is detected, the device gives a brief audible warning so you can cancel false alarms — then automatically calls our monitoring center if no cancellation is received. Modern fall detection is highly accurate, but no system catches 100% of falls, which is why every device also has a manual button.

How long does the battery last between charges?

Life Alarm S leads the industry at up to 45 days. Life Alarm Plus lasts up to 16 days, and Life Alarm Watch up to 7 days. The device alerts you (and us) when battery is low, so you're never caught off guard.
